This tutorial will be divided into two sessions. In the first session, the instructor will introduce the most advanced analytical transmission electron microscopy. In the second session, the instructor will give an introduction to “the advanced synchrotron x-ray applications in materials science.”

Introduction to the Most Advanced Analytical Transmission Electron Microscopy
The application of the related advanced techniques will be discussed for solving materials problems in operando conditions. The in situ TEM techniques including liquid/gas flow will be discussed in the study of materials growth and catalysts, which is important to help understand the structure-property relationship of functional materials. In addition, in situ TEM techniques for electrochemistry studies at the subnanoscale will be discussed with examples from different holder designs to carry out these studies. At the end some perspectives on the future integration of analytical TEM characterization and spectroscopy techniques will be given.

Introduction to the Advanced Synchrotron X-Ray Applications in Materials Science
The general knowledge, uniqueness and available in situ characterization capabilities (diffraction, imaging and spectroscopy) will be introduced at the beginning. Then, advantages of high-energy synchrotron x-rays for in situ probing materials transformations in realistic conditions will be discussed. Some typical examples will be presented that will include (a) In situ study of transforming nanocomposite under stress; (b) In situ probing materials formation and transformation of nanoparticles during the growth process; (c) Electric-field and magnetic-field-induced phase transformation in functional materials; and (d) In operando study of energy materials. Finally, future perspectives of synchrotron x-ray techniques for in situ study of materials transformation will be discussed.
