History, Progress and Perspective of Halide Perovskite Photovoltaics

Since the first report on the solid-state perovskite solar cell with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.7% and 500 h-stability by our group in 2012, its certified PCE now reaches 22.1%. It is believed that the perovskite solar cell is promising in next-generation photovoltaics due to superb performance and very low cost. In this talk, the history of perovskite photovoltaics will be presented along with their scientific progress and perspective. The Lewis acid-based adduct approach was developed to provide methodology for hysteresis-free, stable and high PCE perovskite solar cells. The grain-boundary healing method was developed via a non-stoichiometric approach. The grain-boundary healing process yields PCE as high as 20.4%. A method for reduction in hysteresis and improving moisture stability was developed by interfacial nanoengineering using a two-dimensional perovskite. A universal method to eliminate hysteresis even in a normal mesoscopic structure will be also given in this talk.

About Nam-Gyu Park

Nam-Gyu Park is Professor and SKKU-Fellow at the School of Chemical Engineering, Sungkyunkwan University. He received his BS, MS and PhD degrees from Seoul National University in 1988, 1992 and 1995, respectively. He worked at the Institut de Chimie de la Matière Condensée de Bordeaux-Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (ICMCB-CNRS) from 1996 to 1997, and at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory from 1997 to 1999 as a postdoctoral researcher. He was Director of the Solar Cell Research Center at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) from 2005 to 2009, and worked at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) from 2000 to 2005 before joining Sungkyunkwan University as a full professor in 2009. 

He is a pioneer in the solid-state perovskite solar cell, which was first developed in 2012. He received numerous awards, including the Scientist Award of the Month (MEST, Korea), KIST Award of the Year (KIST, Korea), Dupont Science and Technology Award (Dupont), SKKU fellowship, MRS Outstanding Young Researcher Award, Hamakawa Award of PVSEC and KAST Engineering Award (KAST, Korea). He published over 230 peer-reviewed scientific papers, including ScienceNature MaterialsNature NanotechnologyNature Energy and Nature Communications, 80 patent applications, 1 book editor and 7 book chapters. He received an h-index of 69 as of July 2017.
